I have my laptop on a mount beside my couch (American link). So that when I start doing something on the computer and the cat decides that means he needs to be on my lap, I can have it both ways. He gets to cuddle on my lap and the laptop is held above him so I can still get things done.

The only elastics I've ever found that actually stay in my hair for more than a couple hours (American link). And don't break on me very often. For those with pets, do not let them eat your elastics. It's dangerous and could cause major damage. Which is why I hate when elastics just slip off or break off my hair.
